| The Ferndale High School Marching Band and Color Guard is considered an extra-curricular activity at Ferndale High School. The Marching Band performs at all home Ferndale High School varsity football games, the Bellingham Ski to Sea parade, as well as three to four Pacific Northwest marching band competitions each fall. The Ferndale High School Marching Band and Color Guard rehearses Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30PM, and Saturday mornings from 10:00AM to 1:00PM during the fall in preparation for these performances. Additional summer rehearsals as well as a one-week MANDATORY band camp are a part of the time commitment needed to be a part of this organization. Students must be enrolled in one of the music classes (Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion or Colorguard) to be eligible for participation in the Ferndale High School Band and Colorguard.

| The Ferndale High School Concert Bands consist of two different groups. The first being the Wind Ensemble which is consisted of the older or “more advanced musicians” that are members of the band program. Entry into the wind ensemble is by audition only in the springtime. The second group is called the Symphonic Band and it consists of new members to the band program and/or less experienced musicians. The groups perform at three concerts each school year (holiday concert, winter concert and a spring concert). In addition to these concerts, the wind ensemble prepares material to be performed and adjudicated at a local festival of concert bands and wind ensembles. All members of these bands must be enrolled in their associated class because all rehearsal is conducted during class time.

| The color guard at Ferndale High School performs as a vital part of the Ferndale High School Marching Band. Whether it be as a precision visual element to the award winning field show part of the marching band or as supporting unit to the parade band, the color guard is always there in full force. Participation in the color guard carries the same responsibilities and time commitments that are required of the marching band students. In addition to work outside of the normal school day during marching band season, the students must also be enrolled in the color guard class offered at Ferndale High School.
