| As the parent of a Ferndale High School Band and Color Guard member, you are your student's greatest supporter! Throughout the band year, there will be many opportunities for you to demonstrate that support. In the fall, during the marching season, there are opportunities to chaperone to regional competitions, as well as help out with home football game performances. All of the important dates in the band year are listed on the website's calendar, and it's important to check the website calendar regularly for any updates or changes.
| The winter concert season is a bit quieter, from a parent's perspective, and you can look forward to a delightful concert in December before the winter break. Spring brings a contest season, for both the large ensemble, as well as competitions for solo and smaller ensembles. And the year ends with the parade season, which is another opportunity for you to participate as a chaperone.

| At the beginning of the school year, each member of the marching band is issued a uniform, which consists of pants (which may or may not need to be hemmed), a jacket, gauntlets, and a shako (band-talk for fancy hat with a plume!!) Each student purchases shoes and gloves separately. Black socks are the other part of the marching uniform that are required and supplied by the student. The uniforms are organized and catalogued in the uniform room each fall, and parental help in the fitting and issuing of uniforms each fall is always welcome! Before and after any of the bands marching performances or competitions, parental help would also be appreciated in the uniform room.
| During the winter concert season, students perform in appropriate concert attire (black pants or skirts, and black or white shirts only). Concert attire should be tasteful and not a distraction from the band's performance.

| Being a band and guard parent can involve as much or as little time as you have available! Attending the band's performances throughout the year is one of the greatest ways you can show your support for the efforts your student puts into playing and performing in the band and color guard. Helping out with chaperoning or uniforms is an occasional time commitment, but it’s one of those things where many hands make light work!
| If you have any questions about your student's band experience, or about how you can become more involved, please ask Mr. Menefee, or contact one of the Booster Board members or another band parent who has "been there, done that" before. Band is an enriching experience and will build life-long memories for your student, and it is our hope that you will build some of those memories along with your student as well!
| If you would like to receive regular email updates about the band's calendar and activities, please email Marcia Eastman, meastman@ferndaleband.org and ask to be placed on the band's email newsletter list.
