What is color guard?

Colorguard partners with the Ferndale High School Marching Band to perform:

-during half-time at home football games (Fall)
-at competitions around the state (Fall)
-at the Victoria Day Parade (Spring) in Victoria, B.C.
-at the Ski to Sea Parade (Spring) in Bellingham, WA.

When does color guard practice?

Color guard practices during the color guard class, Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout the fall season. All competitions occur on weekends.

Who currently belongs to color guard?

The color guard is made up of approximately 20 girls representing all four classes at FHS. The colorguard director is Wendy Lynch.

Who can join?

The color guard is open to all students at FHS. Most come from the band program, but many have joined to be with friends already in the group. New members join at the beginning of the fall or after the spring season.

The color guard does not have an audition process and is open to freshmen through seniors that enroll in the color guard class. This activity allows students to participate on many levels.

How much does color guard cost?

In the fall, the colorguard pays a fee identical to the band because of shared events. This fee is normally $125 (payable to Ferndale High School ASB).

Members also wear special shoes, gloves, and warm-ups that are ordered individually. Information on ordering is passed out to students as needed. The approximate costs for these items are: shoes $35, gloves $15, warm-ups $45. Most of these purchased items are reusable from year to year.

What is required of members?

Attendance at our Tuesday night and Saturday morning rehearsals is mandatory. In the event of absence due to illness or emergency, please contact Wendy before the rehearsal.

Attendance at weekend competitions is absolutely mandatory. The primary mission of our group is to perform and compete. Without all members present we cannot put our best effort forward. Competition dates are known months in advance, so please check your schedule before committing to the team.

What extra help is needed?

As with any youth group, we need adult support. We currently need people who can help with very simple sewing projects, simple carpentry, chaperoning/driving on weekend events, and fundraising. If you can help, please contact Mr. Menefee.

Why Colorguard?

Colorguard is a traditional activity that has evolved to include dance, theatrics, and pageantry. It creates a performance opportunity where precision marching and equipment handling is used to create a visual interpretation of music.

The training needed to execute the repertoire is extensive and results in very structured and intense rehearsals.

Students who participate in colorguard year after year love the work ethic, performance opportunities, athleticism, competition, and social dynamics of the group. There is no ceiling for excellence in this activity, so students find ways to improve no matter what their experience level.

In the end, colorguard is a vehicle for students to compete, increase confidence, and push themselves toward success while staying within the realm of the arts.
